Fluoride Treatment for Teeth

Fluoride in Your Drinking Water…What You Need to Know

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. As one might expect, it is very useful to restore the mineral qualities of tooth enamel. Fluoride has been so helpful for oral health and maintenance that some cities add small amounts to drinking water. It is generally safe in small quantities, and little is needed for dental fluoride remineralization gel treatments. Many studies have connected fluoride in the community drinking water to residents having less cavities.

You should know, Calgary does not fluoridate its water.  Since Airdrie gets the same water as Calgary, Airdrie residents do NOT get fluoride in your water either. Calgary actually stopped fluoridating their water in 2011 and has not since resumed. This is even though a study in 2016 by the University of Calgary showed that lack of fluoride in Calgary’s drinking water has led to an increase of residents with cavities.

It is truly unfortunate, but that’s what you have to live with. So, what can you do to keep fluoride as part of your treatment process?

There is a gentle foaming gel that can be applied to the teeth after thoroughly cleaning them. It’s so important for you and your kids to get the right amounts of fluoride to prevent unnecessary decay. You can also purchase such gels to use at home or toothpaste with a special extra-fluoride formula.

A word of caution

If you or your child is experiencing any tooth sensitivity, do not start using these without consulting your dentist first.

The additional minerals can be wasteful or even detrimental. Some patients may not be facing demineralization after all, or may have a rare sensitivity to fluoride.

While many people associate teeth sensitivity or cavities with older adults or to those who neglect their teeth; that’s not always the case.

Should you or your child be complaining of a tooth sensitivity; it would be good to make an appointment with your dentist and get it checked out.
