Dental Problem while Travelling

Dental Issues When Travelling

Most people think of travelling for only during the summer. But with winter breaks and the holidays just around the corner, many families and folks take off to get away during the winter months too. The last thing ANYONE wants to think about when they’re on vacation is sudden dental issues when travelling. Even the tiniest toothache can make a vacation or family outing turn most unpleasant.

Here are some helpful tips should the need arise…

If you’re flying, you’re likely to experience some tooth pain because of air pressure imbalances. This occurs when air enters your teeth through a crack, cavity, or space in your filling.  It then expands because of the pressure changes while flying. This type of toothache should only affect pre-existing problem areas and is common. The good news is, it should go away when you land.

If you have a toothache while flying and it doesn’t go away when you land, here are a few suggestions:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water or hydrogen peroxide, then use floss to dislodge anything that might be stuck in your teeth.
  • If rinsing and flossing doesn’t work, clove oil can be helpful when you’re in a pinch. Apply a few drops (you may want to dilute it with olive oil first) onto a cotton pellet or Q-tip and apply it to the tooth that’s bothering you.
  • Perhaps you just had a tooth extracted? If that area is in pain or bleeding, apply a dampened tea bag (black tea is best) to the extraction site. Tea contains tannic acid, which acts as a natural antiseptic and can also minimizes bleeding.
  • You can also take painkillers. Ibuprofen is usually best, to help with the pain.

However, if the pain persists and you can’t wait for a fix until you return home, you may need to see a dentist while you’re away. Make sure to look at the credentials of the dentist before heading there. If in doubt call your dentist so they can help you decide where to go.

If you contact your dentist while you’re away, they should be able to determine a cause and start a plan to get you out of pain right away.

When you get home, go to the dentist for a check-up.
