Tiny Tooth Worms – Seriously?

In medieval times, most people thought dental cavities were made by tiny tooth worms. Yes, seriously. Tiny Tooth Worms.

They thought these little worms bore holes in the teeth and then hid, out of sight, beneath the surface.

The wiggling they did inside the tooth was believed to cause the pain of toothaches.

Thank goodness you don’t live in medieval times!

Today, of course, science has confirmed the truth about cavities. You now know cavities, or tooth decay, are caused by enamel-eroding bacteria in the plaque that builds up around teeth. When you eat sugary or starchy foods, the bacteria feed on the remnants left on your teeth, while simultaneously creating an acid that eats away at enamel.

Thankfully, you also know a lot more about preventing and treating tooth decay today than our medieval ancestors did. It really is quite a simple process to prevent dental issues.  Brushing, flossing, and eating a tooth-friendly diet are all vital to good oral hygiene, and keeping your teeth healthy for a lifetime.

If you currently have a tooth that has been bothering you, now’s the time to call your dentist and have it checked. You’ll be thrilled to know it’s not being caused by a toothworm!
